history

This mansion is thought to be the most expensive home ever built in its respective city. At one time of its construction in 1888, it contained 40 rooms and cost about $250,000 to build. Its original owner was a very successful brewer, but the mansion was eventually purchased in 1958 by Louis Scott, the first African-American millionaire of this city. A beauty school was housed in the building for a period of time, but now the property is vacant.

A Grant was awarded to restore the mansion and possibly use it for other uses, and work did begin, but it was halted shortly thereafter, and so now the mansion sits in a state of decay. Floors are unsteady, and workers’ lighting and scaffolding is scattered throughout the structure. There are signs of work done to sure up the structure, but it is still a mess. Its one saving grace is the beautiful woodwork in its interior. Banisters carved in intricate designs are everywhere, and some walls contain large murals.
