Remington Arms was founded
in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington in Ilion, New York. It is the oldest
company in the United States which still makes its original product,
and the oldest continuously operating manufacturer in North America.
Remington manufactures rifles, shotguns, revolvers and ammunition,
and is the only company to do so domestically.
In 1888 Remington was purchased
by a major sports good chain which also owned the Union Metallic
Cartidge Company, stationed out of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The
ammunition factory was later built in Bridgeport in 1912. The
plant produced arms for France, Britain and Imperial Russia during
World War I. Then Remington decided to move on and focus on a
more stable business, hunting products.
Remington was purchased by
the DuPont Corporation during the Great Depression, and eventually
oversaw ammunition production for the U.S. government during World
War II.
Remington Arms in Bridgeport
was closed in 1970 in favor of a brand new factory in Lonoke,
Arkansas. This location was considered to be the geographic center
of the sports ammunition market.
Since its closing, the Remington
Arms plant has fallen victim to scrappers and squatters, in addition
to a recent small fire.
