A patient is suing Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital and St. Clares Riverside Medical Center for not stopping him from eating bedsprings, batteries and other inedibles.

Gary Christopher Badger's history of swallowing unusual objects was known when he entered Greystone in October 1993, Mr. Badger's lawyer, Peter J. Koulikourdis, said after filing the complaint in Superior Court here.

Mr. Badger had surgery five times for eating batteries, pens, metal objects, a hanger and an antenna at Greystone and while recovering from surgery at St. Clares, the complaint says.

Mr. Koulikourdis said Mr. Badger has a multiple-personality disorder. "Of his eight documented personalities, only the one named Phillip Bonilla ingests," the lawyer said.

Hospital officials declined comment.
