Hospital worker dies after kick by patient

October 31, 2002 - New York Times

An employee at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital died today after a patient kicked him in the chest, the authorities said.

Jean Max Auguste, 50, of Newark was one of three assistants trying to restrain a patient, Lawrence Cramer, when Mr. Cramer kicked upward and struck Mr. Auguste squarely on the chest, said Lt. Paul Kalleberg of the Morris County prosecutor's office.

Mr. Auguste was declared dead less than 30 minutes later, said the Morris County prosecutor, Michael M. Rubbinaccio. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, but the exact cause of death was to be released Thursday.

The authorities said they planned to charge Mr. Cramer with aggravated manslaughter.
