
The temporary certificate of occupancy was issued on Thursday, said Donnelly. To get a permanent approval, the construction team still must fix some non-life safety issues, he said.
"We have no time frame as to when this might occur, but we are currently working with the Department of Human Services and Economic Development Authority to ensure all of these issues are addressed as quickly as possible," said Donnelly.
The new Greystone is a 450-bed hospital, which, along with 60 beds in existing cottages, will serve a maximum of 510 patients, mostly from Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and parts of Warren counties. Its expected April opening was warmly received yesterday by mental health advocates.
"We commend the current administration for bringing on line a facility that had been five administrations in the making," said Phil Lubitz, of the New Jersey branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. "Now, that we have a brand-new building, we need to ensure that it becomes a center for state-of-the-art treatment."
